ESG in real estate

Understanding Environmental, Social and Governance performance

The growing focus on sustainability and corporate responsibility in Europe has made ESG Environmental, Social and Governance a central framework for evaluating business performance. Stakeholders, regulators and investors increasingly expect companies to report on more than just financial results. For the real estate sector, ESG has become essential for attracting investment, maintaining compliance and demonstrating long term value.

What ESG Means

ESG consists of three core pillars:

Environmental
Covers the environmental impact of an organisation, including carbon emissions, climate adaptation, biodiversity, waste reduction and energy efficiency.

Social
Addresses working conditions, tenant wellbeing, health and safety, community impact, diversity and stakeholder relationships.

Governance
Focuses on leadership, transparency, accountability, anti corruption policies, data privacy and responsible decision making.

As ESG becomes more important for financial and reputational performance, companies must provide reliable and verifiable information on these areas.

Why ESG Matters in Real Estate

  • Investors increasingly use ESG scores to assess long term risks and opportunities
  • Tenants prefer sustainable and socially responsible buildings
  • Regulators require more transparency in sustainability performance
  • ESG contributes to lower operational costs and improved asset value

Although many reporting standards exist, there is no universal format. This creates challenges in determining how organisations should report ESG performance. The CSRD covers this gap, but ESG as a concept remains broader and foundational.

Our Role in ESG for Real Estate

We support real estate organisations in creating verifiable ESG strategies and documentation. Through frameworks like BREEAM, GPR and BCI, we provide measurable sustainability insights that support ESG reporting, investor communication and long term portfolio value.
